Thank You Veterans!

An Amercan Flag display for celebration of a National holiday like Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veterans Day etc.

Today marks the 61st annual Veterans Day, but did you know that the tradition of honoring our brave members of the American military actually started in 1938? Armistice Day (as it was called) was originally a day to honor the soldiers that fought in World War I. However, after the massive war effort (and losses suffered) by America in World War II, “Armistice” was replaced with “Veterans” to honor American veterans of all wars in 1954.

This haiku by Quentin Ehlinger briefly sums up why we honor our vets every year;

Ember

Each eleven November
We all should remember
Every service member
Who left a glowing ember

As you go about your day today, thank a veteran for their sacrifices to this country no matter when they served. Memphis Goodwill employs many veterans in roles big and small but they all contribute to our mission of changing lives . . . and for that we’re eternally grateful.

If you’re a veteran who needs career counseling, job placement assistance, or skills training stop by our Job Center for free assistance.
